Foodie Field Trip: Slow Coast
The Slow Coast lies north of Santa Cruz and south of Half Moon Bay: quiet roads, beautiful scenery and good people.
A foodie field trip for families and the young at heart
Drive up to Pigeon Point Lighthouse and stay at this unique hostel. Dip into the hot tub perched on the cliff beneath the lighthouse’s rotating beam. Don’t forget to bring earplugs, especially if you’re in the dorm accommodations. Beautiful sunrise.
Enjoy some classic California cuisine at Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero.
Visit and sample the wonderful goat cheese at Harley Farms Goat Dairy, also in Pescadero, the last working dairy in San Mateo County. Greet the goats and explore the hay loft in their renovated barn where they host intimate farm dinners and other seasonal festivities.
Visit Swanton Berry Farm north of Davenport and Santa Cruz. Pick your own strawberries, olallieberries, blackberries and kiwis, in season. Sample their jams including unusual varieties such as Tayberry. Learn about the importance of sustainable practices for the workers who grow these berries. “Si se puede.”
Ride bikes on the paths in Santa Cruz, camp at New Brighton State Beach, and pursue other family friendly activities in the Santa Cruz area.
